Repossessed jewellery sparkles again at antique exhibition

PHUKET: It’s that time of year again when the relative values of relationships are covertly assessed through the monetary or emotional worth attached to the object given to that person. Ho ho ho, indeed.

To coincide with the festive season, Eric Smulders – owner of Soul of Asia and ex-Managing Director of Cartier is putting on an exhibition and sale of 60 jewellery pieces, all of which come from government auctions in the United States, where they were picked up from the bankruptcy courts.

“Each piece is around 20 to 30 per cent off the price – it’s a great opportunity to pick up some wonderful pieces,” says Mr Smulders.

During a visit to Soul of Asia, where the show will be held, the Dutchman shows The Phuket News a wonderful array of pieces, including a 14K white gold, 11-carat sapphire, two-carat diamond ring. The recommended retail price is US$9,500, but it will go on sale for a snip at US$4,933.

Each and every piece, which includes earrings, bracelets, rings and broaches, were either made in the US or Europe, and come with certificates to authenticate the quality and prove ownership.

Mr Smulders says that he has been buying jewellery from Sotheby's and Christie's for years but that this was the first time he had put on a show of reclaimed jewellery items.

Twelve of the pieces have already been sold and Mr Smulders has high hopes for the rest of them.

“They’re all wonderful value for money and extremely decorative pieces – good quality for the price. Russians especially know jewellery. Not really Asian art, but certainly jewellery.”

The exhibition is on display now and will run for a month. The official cocktail opening is on December 22. For more information, visit: soulofasia.com
