Surachai Taweesin, 59, was out on his motorbike on July 6 last year, heading to the shops to buy some food, when the pick-up hit and killed him outside the Revenue Office in Chalong. The driver ran away.
Mr Surachai’s relatives complained that in the nine months since then the police had failed to arrest the driver of the truck. In fact, they said, there had been “no update” at all on the case.
So yesterday Watcharapon Taweesin, 33, along with relatives and friends went to Chalong Police Station and parked their vehicles so as to block the entrance.
Mr Watcharapon and his troops also plastered their vehicles, the wall of the police station, and some police cars with handmade posters complaining that the police were “not working” and had not tried to find the pickup driver.
Col Sakchai Limjaroen, Deputy Commander of the Provincial Police, went to Chalong and convened a meeting between the officers supposed to be following up on the case, Mr Surachai’s family and Pradit Ongsantipap, the owner of the pick-up truck.
At 1:30 pm, after tense negotiations, Mr Pradit agreed to pay Mr Surachai’s family compensation of B900,000.
The relatives said they still want the police to pursue the driver of the pick-up truck, known only by his nickname, Dam.
Satisfied that they had moved the case along, they then lifted their siege.
