Rapper Eakapan rocks Para Games with 5th gold

ASEAN PARA GAMES: Para swimmer Eakapan Songwichean continued his remarkable campaign at the 13th Asean Para Games in Nakhon Ratchasima yesterday (Jan 24), taking his personal tally to five gold medals after securing two more titles.

The 24-year-old, who also performs as rapper EarthSN, produced a superb swim in the men’s 200m individual medley SM5 final, clocking 3:32.33min to set a new Games record, reports the Bangkok Post.

He then returned to the pool to anchor Thailand’s mixed team to victory in the 4x50m medley relay S1-S10, finishing in 3:18.66 alongside teammates Wilasini Wongnonthapoom, Patcharin Chanin and Zy Kher Lee.

Eakapan had already claimed gold in the 50m backstroke, 100m backstroke and 100m butterfly earlier in the tournament.

Another standout performer was Natirat Meeprom, who added to his medal collection with gold in the men’s 200m backstroke S14 final, touching in 2:15.78min. The Thai swimmer had set a Games record in the 200m individual medley SM14 event on Friday, confirming his status as one of the brightest prospects in the region.

Thailand also celebrated a one-two finish in the men’s 400m freestyle S11 final, with Adisorn Chokniramit winning in 5:45.50 ahead of compatriot Chon Sonsamrong, who clocked 6:09.52. In the men’s 400m freestyle S14, Nithikorn Jeampiriyakul and Phakhawat Kumarasing ensured another Thai podium sweep.

Nantawat Ropkob captured the men’s 400m freestyle S9 crown and added silver in the 50m butterfly S9 final, while in the women’s competition Nattharinee Khajhonmatha triumphed in the 400m freestyle S14 and Wachiraphon Thavornvasu secured gold in the 100m breaststroke SB14.

Thailand’s para athletes remained the backbone of the host nation’s medal tally, extending their haul to 45 golds yesterday.

Sasirawan Inthachot won the women’s long jump T46/T47 with a leap of 4.74m, beating Myanmar’s Nandar Lin (3.95m). In the women’s discus throw F37, Thailand celebrated a one-two finish as Fasai Yapakham led with 26.81m and Apasiri Nootsreatthee followed with 22.47m.

Later in the day, Artitaya Premphon added the women’s 5,000m T54 gold, while Orawan Kaising won the women’s 800m T20 in 2:26.988min, edging Indonesia’s Tiwa (2:31.676).

Thailand’s para fencers also impressed, taking their tally to ten golds with victories in the mixed team epee and sabre events.

In table tennis, Rungroj Thaniyom and Kanlaya Chaiwut won the mixed doubles TT14 final, while Kittinan Harnpichai and Patamawadee Intanon claimed the TT7 mixed doubles crown.

Wheelchair tennis star Sakhorn Khanthasit captured the women’s singles title, defeating compatriot Wanitha Inthanin 6-1, 6-1.

Archery added further success as Phannibha Srathongmaew and Wasana Kuthawisap edged Vietnam 142-141 in a tense women’s doubles compound open final to secure gold.
