The incident occurred on Laem Hong Anusorn Rd, near the Laem Honga intersection, where mud and soil spilled onto the road surface following downpours overnight on Sunday (May 3).
By 1pm yesterday (May 4), Mueang Phuket District Chief Siwat Rawangkul led an inspection of the site alongside Ratsada Mayor Jirayut Songyot and officers from the Phuket Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office (DDPM Phuket).
Officials confirmed that the runoff originated from a private construction site covering about 40 rai, where excavation and land-filling works had been approved. However, heavy rainfall caused soil from the site to slide downhill, blocking the road and making travel hazardous for motorists.
Authorities ordered immediate action to clear the affected road, with machinery deployed to remove mud and restore access as quickly as possible. The contractor responsible for the site had already begun cleanup efforts earlier in the day, officials noted.
As an initial safety measure, the construction project has been temporarily suspended while authorities assess the risk of further slides. Engineers and disaster prevention officials have been tasked with closely monitoring the area.
Officials have also instructed the project operator to implement stronger preventative measures, including the construction of retaining walls and an improved drainage system to prevent runoff during future downpours.
Further investigation is underway to determine whether any negligence or violations of construction regulations contributed to the incident. If breaches are identified, administrative penalties may be imposed under relevant laws.
Local authorities stressed that public safety remains the top priority, with progress reports to be submitted to the Phuket Governor. Measures are being taken to ensure the road is fully secured and that similar incidents do not occur again.
