The blockade came after angry exchanges on Sek’s official Facebook page, in which he declared that he would vote in national elections planned for February 2.
Supporters of politician Suthep Thaugsuban, who oppose the holding of an election until Thai politics are “cleaned up”, piled in with comments condemning him.
He responded bitterly, “Before you used to ask stars and singers to campaign for votes. Today I posted that I will vote. You condemned me. Are you all bad guys?!? Do you have any sense? Is no one allowed to think differently from you? You guys are crazy, do you know that? Are you guys Thai? I wanna kick you in the neck. Damn f**k!”
Predictably his comments were widely shared and the debate went from the internet to Saphan Hin, with protestors, some carrying posters saying they were not at all pleased with the rock star, gathering at the entrance of the fair to block the concert.
The Governor’s wife, Pawinee Intusut, President of Phuket Red Cross, accompanied by other officials came out to negotiate with the protesters at around 8.30 pm, but were confronted with boos and the blowing of whistles.
They retreated and, at 9:30 pm, the official announcement came from the stage that Sek Loso would not be performing.
Other performances went ahead as scheduled.
Sek later posted on Facebook, “The Governor asked me to postpone my concert in Phuket. I don’t want to offend anyone. I just want to make people happy. OK kids, I’ll be back next time.”
