Thalang Police announced the revision after reviewing CCTV footage and receiving preliminary autopsy results that contradicted the initial assumption of a stabbing.
The incident occurred at around 4:40am on the northbound side of Thepkrasattri Rd, opposite Phuket Poly Products Co in Moo 7, Thepkrasattri.
CCTV from nearby locations showed the victim, identified as 33-year-old Phongsathorn Jinowat, riding a bicycle along the left lane when a speeding truck with a long trailer struck him from behind, knocking him to the ground before continuing without stopping.
Thalang Police Chief Pol Col Nikorn Chuthong and Deputy Chief Lt Col Anukul Nuket confirmed the findings after meeting with doctors at Vachira Phuket Hospital.
The post-mortem examination revealed three irregular wounds above the right waist, spaced four to five centimetres apart and two to three centimetres deep.
Doctors determined that the injuries were not caused by a knife or sharp weapon, but by impact from a hard, uneven object. The wounds did not affect vital organs and were not the cause of death.
Instead, internal injuries consistent with a vehicle impact were found, including fractures to the right side of the back and the left pelvic bone, resulting in severe internal bleeding.
“The findings confirm that the man’s death resulted from a road accident, not an assault,” Pol Col Nikorn said.
Further supporting evidence included traces of paint from a trailer truck on the right handlebar of the victim’s bicycle. Investigators also confirmed that Phongsathorn had no known personal conflicts or recent disputes.
Thalang Police said they are now focusing their investigation on identifying the truck and its driver. Officers are continuing to collect additional CCTV footage from the surrounding area to determine the vehicle’s route and ownership.
Police urged motorists to exercise caution, particularly in low-visibility hours, and reminded drivers that fleeing the scene of an accident is a serious offence under Thai law.
