The move follows a foreign tourist caught on video riding a motorbike on the beach yesterday (Apr 9).

Last week a Thai tourist was fined B1,000 for driving a car on the beach. The tourist, named by police only as "Mr Prasopchok", 39, from Bangkok, was on holiday in Phuket with his family.

Mr Prasopchok told police that he thought driving on the beach was allowed. Some reports said Mr Prasopchok claimed that he saw a truck taking jet-skis onto the beach and thought it was permitted to drive along it. So he did.

Last month, police were left to recover a Jeep left abandoned on the sand, presumably by a tourist.

Kamala Police Chief Pol Col Somsak Thongkliang said yesterday that action was being taken under the direction of Phuket Provincial Police Commander Pol Maj Gen Sinlert Sukhum.

Col Somsak said plainly that tourists were strictly prohibited from driving their vehicles onto the beach.

Meanwhile, Kamala OrBorTor will have a barrier installed at the ramp used by jet-ski and parasail operators to prevent the public from using it to access the beach. The operators will be instructed to close the barrier behind them each time after they use it.

Officials said they will also install warning signs and and launch a public awareness campaign so that people know that taking motorbikes and cars onto the beach is prohibited.
