Pol Gen Chakthip said yesterday evening (Nov 10) that he regretted losing the knowledge and competence of Pol Maj Gen Paween. He said he is ready to meet Pol Maj Gen Paween at any time and discuss the decision to resign rather than go to the South.
Pol Gen Chakthip stopped short of a promise to review the actual order to transfer Pol Maj Gen Paween, or to approve his resignation request, adding he would need to talk with him first.
The Police Commission last month approved a reshuffle of more than 200 police officers in which the 57-year-old deputy commissioner of Provincial Police Region 8 was transferred to sit as deputy chief of the Southern Border Provinces Police Operation Centre (SBPPOC).
Pol Maj Gen Paween tendered his resignation last Thursday (Nov 4), saying he feared for his safety because the suspects he is prosecuting are influential in the region. He said the transfer order put him in an awkward position since he has not been trained to take on a senior post in the deep South.
Pol Maj Gen Paween earlier voiced his concerns through the press but the police chief insisted that the reshuffle order was justifiable. He urged the head of the Rohingya human trafficking probe to lodge a complaint with the Administrative Court.
The police chief has 30 days, or until Dec 6, whether to approve or suspend Pol Maj Gen Paween’s resignation.
