Police blame ground collapse for concrete truck accident in Kathu

PHUKET: Police have explained that the fully loaded concrete mixer truck that went tumbling down a hillside and stopping just short of a coffee shop along the Kathu-Koh Kaew Road last week (July 31) was caused by the ground on a dirt road behind the coffee shop giving way.

Kathu Police were called to the scene, behind the Coffee in Farm Coffee In Farm Phuket café and restaurant, located directly across from the Tin Mining Museum on Route 3030, at 12.30pm.

Officers arrived to find the Bangkok-registered truck upside-down, coming to rest just behind the coffee shop. The driver, Patipat Somrak, 50, was trapped in the cab.

Mr Patipat was freed from the cab, given first aid and transported to Vachira Phuket Hospital.

According to a police report now made available, the injured driver, Mr Patipat later told police he had been transporting three cubic metres of concrete ‒ weighing about eight tonnes ‒ from M Concrete Company in Baan Manik to a hillside road construction site behind the café.

With the truck’s own weight of 11 tonnes, the total load reached 19 tonnes. As he slowed near the site, the ground beneath the truck collapsed, causing it to plunge down the hill, the report said.

A large crane was brought in to lift the truck from the wreckage, while insurance representatives were contacted to arrange compensation for the coffee shop’s damages, Kathu Police reported.
