Muslim residents of tambon Ban Klang strongly opposed the planned development of a pig farm on 100 rai of land in their community, saying it was against Islamic teaching. The land adjoining the farm is owned by Muslims.
The farm would have been on hilly land and the waste would flow into the watershed area of a canal that runs through Ban Klang village. Construction of the pig farm was supported by a giant business conglomerate.
The community complained to the government’s Damrongtham centre in Krabi. The head of the centre, Theera Chucherd, said today (June 2) that after talks with the land owner and the supporting company it was agreed the land should instead be developed as a commercial chicken farm, producing eggs, according to Thairath Online.
Vorayut Sanglang, head of Village Moo 1 in tambon Ban Klang, said he was aware of the land owner’s decision. A public meetng would be held in the community to see if the change was acceptable to residents.
He said original plans to develop the pig farm had gone ahead over the objections of the local community, which had been ignored until they complained officially.
