Patong Police received a report of the incident, in the Baan Mon area of Patong, just after 7:30pm.
CCTV footage circulating online shows a black pickup truck towing a speedboat travelling at speed along the road before sideswiping a red tuk-tuk parked outside a massage shop. The force of the impact sent the tuk-tuk crashing into the front of the shop.
The collision damaged the shop’s facade and items at the front of the premises, as well as motorcycles parked nearby.
Initial reports indicated that six people were injured in the incident. Five people sustained minor injuries while one person suffered serious injuries.
Rescue workers from the Kusoldharm Phuket Foundation responded to the scene along with medical staff from Patong Hospital. The injured were provided with first aid before being transported to Patong Hospital for treatment.
The crash drew a large crowd of bystanders and tourists who gathered to watch as rescue workers and police attended the scene.
Patong Police are continuing their investigation to determine the cause of the accident. Officers are examining whether excessive speed or loss of control of the vehicle may have contributed to the crash.
