Pol Maj Akaraphon Siwilai of the Tha Chatchai Police was informed of the accident, opposite Ban Tha Chatchai Mosque on Thepkrasattri Rd in Moo 5, Mai Khao, at 4:55pm.
Rescue workers from the Mai Khao Tambon Administrative Organisation (OrBorTor) and Phuket Kusoldharm Foundation arrived to find the Phuket-registered four-door Isuzu pickup off the southbound lane with heavy damage in the impact.
The driver, Piya Channarong, 43, a resident of Moo 1, Chalong, had suffered an injury to his forehead but was conscious.
However, rescue workers were unable to recover Mr Piya from the wreck as his legs were pinned.
Rescue workers brought hydraulic equipment to free Mr Piya from the wreck and rush him to Thalang Hospital. His medical condition was not reported.
According to a preliminary investigation by police, Mr Piya lost control of the vehicle after he clipped a small cement divider separating the southbound traffic coming onto the island from the far right lane. The pickup crashed through a coconut tree and slammed into a pine tree.
As far as Mr Piya was concerned, "it was as if someone had yanked on the steering wheel", police said.
The pickup wreck was taken to Tha Chatchai Police Station while police continue their investigation.
