Pol Lt Col Suchart Meelumpong of Phuket police station at 11:50 p.m. last night (March 12) was notified of an accident in Koh Kaew on Thepkrasttri Rd's southbound lane at the curve about 200 metres north of the turnoff for Laem Hin.
At the scene of the accident, police found a totalled white Chevrolet Captiva on its side and with its rear end entangled with the roadside barrier. About five meters away was a Honda Dream modified trailer motor bike (rot saleng) with a damaged rear end and in the roadside ditch.
A tub of ice cream found on the road is believed to have come off of the modified trailer motorbike. Nearby rescue workers were administering CPR to a man who was lying in a pool of his own blood that was coming from a wound on his head.
An ambulance from Mission Hospital finally arrived and transported the man who was initially reported to be in critical condition, but later pronounced dead at hospital. The man was named as Solae Nonsri, 48.
Pol Lt Col Suchart told The Phuket News that the driver of the white car had later turned herself in and said that she had fled the scene initially in fear of retaliation from the victim's relatives. The woman was named as 29-year-old Busaba Wongnoi.
Police said that the woman has already posted bail, which was covered by her first-class insurance, but declined to comment further. The Phuket News understands that police did not check the woman for alcohol or drugs.
UPDATE: Phuket City Police have told The Phuket News that Ms Busaba was not tested for alcohol or drugs as she "did not show any signs of being under the influence of either drugs or alcohol."
Ms Busaba told police that she collided with the motorbike because she could not see the motorbike's taillight, police said.
Ms Busaba, however, has been charged with reckless driving causing death.
