The current version of the now week-long weather warning explains that as Tropical Storm Soulik hits Vietnam, the southwest monsoon will increase in intensity as air is drawn from the Andaman Sea to feed the storm system on the eastern side of the Isthmus of Kra.
The storm’s centre was located approximately 250km east of Nakhon Phanom Province, with wind speeds reaching 65km/h. Moving west at a speed of 20km/h, Soulik is expected to weaken into a tropical depression and eventually become a low-pressure system, the weather advisory explained.
Residents in these regions are warned to be cautious of flash floods and forest runoff, particularly in hillside areas, near waterways, and low-lying regions until at least Monday (Sept 23).
Meanwhile, Phuket remains under the standing disaster alert, issued earlier this week.
Officials are on high alert for flash flooding and under orders to provide immediate assistance wherever necessary, and residents in risk areas are urged to beware flash floods and risk of landslides in their areas.
All boats less than 14 metres long are instructed to stay ashore, under a notice issued by the Phuket Marine Office.
All people are urged to follow updated weather reports.
