The festival began with thousands of people turning out for the raising of the Go Teng poles at participating shrines across the island on Saturday evening (Oct 14).

Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannarat and other leading provincial figures, such as Phuket Provincial Police Commander Maj Gen Sermphan Sirikong, joined the first official event of the festival at the Jui Tui Shrine in Phuket Town, one  of the largest Chinese shrines in Phuket, at sunset on Saturday.

The rituals continued with ablutions and paying tribute to the Jade Emperor and the Nine Emperor Gods yesterday.

The street processions began with the Jchoor Su Gong Naka Shrine, better known as the Naka Shrine in Wichit, this morning.

Devotees and Mah Song spirit mediums departed the Naka Shrine at 7:30am, making their way to the Naka Intersection in Kathu, where the procession continued eastbound along Wichit Songkram Rd into Phuket Town.

From there the procession will make its way to Saphan Hin before retuning to the Naka Shrine in Wichit.

Traffic delays are expected.

The street processions will continue for the nine days of the festival. For a full list of the street processions to be held, click here.
