Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannarat led the festivities at the Chartered Bank Intersection in the Phuket Old Town area, joined by a host of Phuket’s top officials.
Joining Governor Sophon with his wife, Mrs Busadee, who serves as the President of the Red Cross Society of Phuket Province, led the countdown to the New Year, joined by Phuket City Mayor Saroj Angkanapilas.
The crowd were treated to live concerts by artists including Jenifer Kim, Zani, Koh Mr Saxman and Park.
Throughout the crowd were white balloons sold to raise money for the Phuket City Care Center. Many of the balloons, white to symbolise peace, were released into the air to mark the New Year.
As part of the festivities participants who registered their attendance online have the chance to win a round-trip flight to a destination within the country.
Meanwhile, tourists can soak up the charm of Lard Yai Walking Street on Thalang Rd, Soi Rommanee and the Chartered Walking Street market on Phang Nga Rd, where more than 350 vendors are selling food and various products.
Special for the New Year is the Lard Yai Walking Street, held every Sunday, being open again today (Jan 1).
