Pol Sgt Maj Katapong Saiwijit, 32, a traffic squad leader with Phuket City Police, was injured in the incident, which occurred at about 8:30pm on the inbound lanes in Ratsada.

According to the report filed by investigating officer Pol Lt Bandhita Thong-un, officers responding to the scene found Sgt Maj Katapong lying injured beside his police motorcycle. He was subsequently transported to Vachira Phuket Hospital, where doctors confirmed he had suffered a fractured jaw and was receiving treatment.

The other driver involved, identified as 72-year-old Suthean Romyanankit, was behind the wheel of a Phuket-registered car, police reported.

Police said Mr Suthean had been driving out of Soi Sakon Khet and attempting to make a U-turn in front of Nueng Yan Yon when his vehicle collided with the officer’s motorcycle, which was travelling from the Rajabhat intersection towards Phuket Town.

A breathalyser test administered at the scene showed Mr Suthean had no alcohol in his system.

However, investigators determined that the crash was caused by negligent driving by Mr Suthean, resulting in injury to another person.

Police documented the scene and prepared an initial sketch as part of the investigation. Legal proceedings will follow in accordance with the findings, Phuket City Police confirmed.
