The monk-led procession started at Jui Tui shrine, otherwise known as Jui Tui Tao Bo Geng, before making its way around local streets, attracting over 2,000 revellers to watch and take part.

Local residents and tourists alike looked on as the procession passed, with a series of colourful floats following a revered Buddha statue that was being carried, with firecrackers being set off in every street that it passed.

Participants in the procession displayed a series of customary piercings to their faces where items such as kitchen knives, spikes, umbrellas and other items were seen piercing their cheeks and tongues.

Additionally, there was an oil bath present which is believed to denote bad luck to anyone who indulges in eating vegetables while the monk-led procession passes by.

Having completed its route of the local streets, the procession returned to Jui Tui shrine where a table had been set up to receive the Buddha statue.

Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannarat and his wife Busadee Suwannarat, who serves as the President of the Red Cross Society of Phuket, were also present at this morning’s procession, joining in the fun with the throng of revellers.

Tomorrow sees the eighth day of the Festival and will see the customary procession of monks around Kathu, departing from Jui Tui Tao Bo Keng Shrine at 6:45am and 7pm respectively.

This occasion will also see a goose plucking ceremony take place which is believed to exorcise bad luck.

As usual, expect traffic delays, while the street processions are taking place.
