The funding allocation was confirmed during a meeting of the provincial sub-committee tasked with reviewing applications for the Road Safety Fund, held at Phuket Provincial Hall this week.
Vice Governor Adul Chuthong chaired the meeting, which was attended by Phuket Provincial Transport Officer Adcha Buachan, sub-committee members and representatives from agencies proposing projects.
The meeting acknowledged the approval of the 2026 Road Safety Fund allocation to Phuket, with the budget to be directed towards initiatives designed to curb road accidents, minimise injuries and fatalities, and strengthen safety measures across the province.
Officials noted that the national Road Safety Fund supports projects that promote safer road use, public awareness and risk prevention, with contributions from government agencies, educational institutions and local organisations.
During the session, the sub-committee also reviewed the criteria governing applications for funding. Projects must demonstrate clear objectives, show proven potential to reduce accidents, avoid duplicating existing agency responsibilities, and include measurable outcomes.
A number of proposals were put forward for consideration, including the “Smart Kids, Smart Road Safety” initiative aimed at instilling traffic discipline among young people, and the creation of a provincial road accident data centre to support public health planning.
Other proposals included road safety survival skills training programmes for students, the production of public awareness materials targeting both residents and tourists, and the establishment of district-level road safety operational centres in Phuket Town, Thalang and Kathu.
Officials said the range of proposals highlighted cooperation across multiple sectors in tackling road safety issues, with a focus on proactive measures to reduce the loss of life and property.
The initiatives are also expected to help strengthen confidence among both residents and visitors by demonstrating a coordinated effort to improve safety standards on Phuket’s roads, said an official report of the meeting.
Further consideration and approval of individual projects will proceed in line with the fund’s regulations, with successful proposals to be implemented throughout the 2026 fiscal year, the report concluded.
