Phuket set for Toyota badminton comp

BADMINTON: Phuket is gearing up to host the Toyota Phuket International Challenge 2026 badminton tournament, which runs from June 9-14.

The tournament will be held at the 4,000-seat indoor gymnasium at Saphan Hin with more than 400 athletes from 33 countries competing for a prize pot of US$20,000 (B650,000).

The event is being organised via a collabration between the Badminton Association of Thailand under the Royal Patronage, the Sport Association of Phuket, and the Phuket Provincial Administrative Organization (PPAO).

An official meeting was held at Phuket Provincial Hall on May 27, overssen by Phuket Vice Governor Suwit Phansengiam, to outline the key details of the event realting to the readiness of the venue, security and traffic management, transportation for athletes from their accommodation to the competition venue, first aid and emergency procedures, and publicising the tournament.

The event will have a positive impact on the local economy, explained Mr Suwit, with between B50-60 million expected to be generated.

Furthermore it promotes Phuket as leading sports city and destination which can inspire local residents and youngsters in particular to pursure a healthier lifestyle for playing the sport of badminton.

Mr Suwit concluded by confirming the event is free to attend and people living in Phuket as well as visiting tourists are welcome to come along and cheer on the athletes.
