Today (December 26) marks seven years since the tsunami hit the region, causing widespread devastation and some 7,000 deaths in Thailand.
In Kamala, people gathered at the tsunami memorial near the beach, while in Mai Khao a religious service and wreath-laying ceremony took place and the Tsunami Wall of Remembrance.
At Mai Khao, American Cindy Braton said although she did not know anyone killed in the tsunami, she wanted to pay her respects.
“I wanted to be part of this memorial event. This is the fourth time I have attended,” she said.
Later on this evening, Patong will host “Light up Phuket”. At 6.50pm a memorial service will take place at Loma Park, with a candle-lighting ceremony at 7.10pm at Patong Beach, and a Thai classical mask dance from the Ramayana at 7.35pm.
