Phuket readies for royal visit for King’s Cup Regatta

PHUKET: Her Majesty Queen Suthida will be in Phuket to take part in racing in the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta and to officiate the handing out of awards to winners this Saturday (Dec 9).

HM The Queen’s arrival on the island was confirmed by Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannarat at a meeting at Karon Municipality yesterday (Dec 3).

At the meeting, Governor Sophon called on the heads of all agencies to make sure preparations were underway and that the preparations would be complete in time for Her Majesty’s visit, and that Queen Suthida’s visit would be “smooth and dignified”.

HM Queen Suthida on Saturday will join the racing team on board the racing yacht ‘THA72’, which is competing in the IRC Zero class.

The main racing in the 35th Phuket King’s Cup regatta begins today (Dec 4), following youngsters in more than 120 dinghies taking to the waters off Kata Beach yesterday to start their schedule of races.

Team Hollywood under veteran Australian sailor Ray Roberts is back to defend his title in the IRC Zero class, which he has won for the past three consecutive King’s Cup Regattas.

The awards ceremony for the 35th Phuket King’s Cup Regatta will be held at the Beyond Kata Resort on Saturday evening, when HM The Queen will officiate the handing out of awards.

The public are invited to attend a public appearance by Her Majesty Queen Suthida at Beyond Kata Hotel, Karon, at 3:30pm. 

Her Majesty Queen Suthida will also visit in front of the Robinson Lifestyle mall in Thalang and iIn front of Aeronautical Radio of Thailand Co Ltd (the Phuket Air Control Center) near Phuket International Airport. The times for these two public appearances have yet to be announced.
