Phuket protesters force govt TV station to close, target university

PHUKET: Following the grenade attacks in Bangkok on Friday and Sunday (January 17 and 19) that killed a Phuket man and injured dozens of other anti-government protestors, their counterparts in Phuket are today pumping up the pressure on local government institutions.

This morning hundreds of Shut Down Phuket supporters marched to Prawat Rd in Phuket Town – the road leading into Rajabhat Phuket University – where they besieged the government-run Channel 11 TV studios and forced them to close.

Currently they are in the university, demanding to speak with the university's president.

Suratin Lienudom, the leader of the protesters, using a microphone belonging to the college's PR department, began calling for the president an hour ago but he has so far not made an appearance.

It's lunchtime and tempers are fraying among the hungry protestors, a Phuket News journalist reports.

About 10 minutes ago the deputy president, Disan Laethongkom, appeared. He told the protesters the president is currently in Bangkok. He added that he could not order the university closed, but said that students and lecturers could, if they wish, join the protest.

The protesters continue to demand that the university close completely.

Tomorrow is expected to be a fractious day when the funeral of Patong-based minibus driver Prakong Choojan, who died of wounds sustained in Friday's grenade attack, is due to take place in Patong.
