Phuket on earthquake alert after region rocked by tremors

PHUKET: The National Disaster Warning Centre (NDWC) is monitoring earthquakes in the region after a tremors measuring 6.2 Magnitude struck the Andaman and Nicobar Islands just before midnight last night (Nov 8).

The National Disaster Warning Centre (NDWC) is monitoring earthquakes in the region after the Andaman and Nicobar Islands were rocked by a 6.2M tremor yesterday. Map: TMD

The earthquake caused no damage to Thailand and failed to trigger a tsunami alert, the NDWC said in a statement issued this morning (Nov 9).

People in Phang Nga, Krabi, Surat Thani and Phuket reported feeling the tremors.

The earthquake, which began at 11:47pm and continued at a depth of 10km. (Click here.)

Hours earlier, at 4:47pm yesterday, a 6.4 Magnitude an earthquake struck north of Sumatra, some 450km southwest of Phuket. (Click here.)

The same area has since seen more than 20 aftershocks (click here).

“The NDWC is monitoring the situation closely,” the NDWC said in a statement issued today.

“We will tell people if more earthquakes happen.”
