A selection committee convened at Phuket Provincial Hall this week, chaired by Vice Governor Suwit Phansengiam, to interview and shortlist student applicants from across the province. The panel included representatives from government agencies, educational institutions and local administrative organisations.
The meeting aimed to choose two youth delegates and two reserve candidates to represent Phuket at the national programme, which will be held from Apr 21-30 at the Sukhothai Thammathirat Open University Seminar and Training Center in Nonthaburi. The event will bring together 200 young participants from across the country.
Officials said the ‘Youth Democracy’ project is designed to strengthen young people’s understanding of democratic principles and political culture through a series of workshops, parliamentary study visits and simulated parliamentary sessions.
The initiative also seeks to promote civic responsibility, volunteerism and analytical thinking, while building a nationwide network of youth equipped to share knowledge within their communities and contribute to long-term national development.
For Phuket, participation in the programme is seen as an opportunity to cultivate a new generation of local leaders. Selected students are expected to return as ‘model youth’, with a stronger understanding of law and governance, and the ability to support communication of government policies at the provincial level.
They are also encouraged to play a more active role in local development by reflecting community concerns and proposing ideas suited to Phuket’s status as a world-class tourism destination.
Results of the selection process will be announced through the project’s official channels, including its website and the ‘Youth Democracy’ Facebook page, with final lists to be released by province or region.
