The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) South Western Meteorological Center, based near Phuket International Airport, yesterday issued a forecast of heavy rain and strong wind waves in the upper Andaman Sea, said the warning, issued by Director of Marine Office 5 Phuket Branch Nachapong Pranit.

From tomorrow (Aug 29) through to Saturday (Sept 2), the southwest monsoon over the upper Andaman Sea and Southern Thailand west coast is expected to intensify.

“For this reason, abundant rain and heavy rain to very heavy rain will occur in some areas. The affected areas include the provinces of Ranong, Phang Nga, Phuket and Krabi,” the warning said.

“People should beware of severe conditions,” the warning continued.

Wind waves in upper part of the Andaman Sea are forecast to reach two metres tall, and up to three metres tall in thundershower areas.

“All ships should proceed with caution, and avoid thundershower areas. Small boats in upper part of the Andaman Sea should keep ashore,” the warning aded.

Mr Nachapong reminded boat operators that they must comply with Marine Department Announcement no. 234/2564, issued on Nov 12, 2021, regarding safe passage at sea with due regard to vessel size and prevailing weather conditions.

As such, all boats less than 10 metres long must remain ashore during the period Aug 29 to Sept 2.

All boat operators were also required to ensure that all safety equipment mandated must be on board and fully operational, and that operators must comply with all safety protocols, including the provision of life jackets.
