Phuket maintains zero road deaths in Songkran ‘Seven Days’ campaign

PHUKET: With Phuket entering its last day of the ‘Seven Days’ safety campaign for Songkran 2024, the island still has yet to suffer its first death on the roads since the campaign began last Thursday (Apr 11).

So far 44 people have been hospitalised for injuries in the 44 accidents recognised by local officials over the past four days.

During the 24 hours of yesterday (Apr 16), Day 6 of the campaign, five people were injured in five accidents across the island, according to the daily report prepared by the Phuket branch of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM Phuket).

Four people were injured in four accidents in Muang District, one person was injured in an accident in Kathu District, said the report.

Of the 44 people admitted to hospital for road-accident injuries, 26 were Thai nationals, 11 were Myanmar nationals and seven were marked as “foreigners” in the DDPM Phuket report.

Of note, national road safety agency ThaiRSC reported 62 people injured in road accidents in Phuket yesterday, but concurred there had been no deaths.

The ‘Seven Days’ safety campaign for Songkran 2024 began at midnight Wednesday night last week and will conclude at midnight tonight (Apr 17).

Phuket last year concluded the Seven Days safety campaign for Songkran with five people killed and 51 people admitted to hospital for injuries sustained in road accidents.

ThaiRSC currently reports 55 deaths and 8,190 people injured in road accidents in Phuket since Jan 1.
