Phuket light rain blamed for five-vehicle pile-up

PHUKET: A wet road from an isolated rain shower in central Phuket today (Apr 23) was blamed for a pickup truck striking the back of another vehicle then flying across the median strip to hit an SUV. Two tour vans were also unable to avoid the collision.

The accident occurred on Thepkrasattri Road in Baan Lipon, shortly before 12:45pm today (Apr 23).

“Autchatha Itsariwateekorn, 67, said he was driving to the airport when he lost control because the road was wet,” said Lt Suporn Muangkhai of the Thalang Police.

Mr Autchatha’s Mitsubishi Triton pickup hit the back of Toyota Hilux, leaving only a dent in the bumper, but his vehicle then crossed the median, rolled onto its side and crashed into the side of a Mitsubishi Pajero heading southbound.

The Mitsubishi Pajero struck the back of a minivan in front of it, while another minivan slid sideways from behind and collided lightly into the rolled Triton.

Workers took over an hour to clear the road to let traffic to pass.

Somehow, all occupants in all of the vehicles involved in the accident escaped any serious injuries, said Lt Suporn.

“None of them were taken to hospital, and the two tour vans were not carrying any passengers at the time of the accident,” he said.

“We have yet to press charges, but we have brought all people involved in the accident to Thalang Police Station for questioning before we conclude our investigation,” Lt Suporn said.
