Year 6 teacher and Key Stage 2 phase leader Suzanne Carter spoke with The Phuket Newsabout the event.
“The idea came about whilst planning and deciding what history units the students would learn. For the past two or three years, we always taught the students about the Ancient Greeks, made shields and armory and staged a battle, which was a big hit. So this year we decided to cover all different time periods across the ages,” she explained.
Year 3 were represented as Stone Age barbarian warriors, while Year 4 were the Ancient Spartans; Year 5 the Ancient Athenians; Year 6 the Romans and Vikings.
“Weaponry and war had always been a huge part of the lessons, and so it proved a fantastic opportunity for everyone in Key Stage 2 to get together and all work together on something, separately in their respective classes, but bringing it all together in one final event to share with their parents,” she added.
Ms Carter noted that the presentations also allowed for students to learn about the other historical periods from their peers as well.
The school takes an interdisciplinary approach to its projects and events, and The Battle of the Ages was no different, having integrated Design & Technology with History, Art, Music and Drama.
“In Design and Technology, the students got into the mechanics for making weapons, like catapults. It included many elements of science, namely the physics, trial and error and evaluation, for instance.”
“We combined History with Art in making the sheilds and armory, and the kids further developed their stage skills working with our music and drama department,” she added.
As for the history element, the students delved into various aspects of civilisation – way of life, eating, social matters, trade, expansion and war.
Next half term, KS2 students are looking forward to continue with a new geography unit. And after the Christmas holiday, they look ahead to a Science Fair in Term 2 and a Sculpture Fair in Term 3.
