Lt Santichai Srimai of the Thalang Police was called to the scene, a section of roadworks west of the Heroines Monument, at 11pm.
Police arrived with Kusoldharm rescue workers to find a Yamaha motorbike lying on the road. Nearby were Pisit Thongkam 21, the driver of the motorbike, and his passenger, Anongwadee Boonsop, 24.
“Both were taken to Thalang Hospital. Mr Pisit is still receiving treatment for his wounds, but Ms Anongwadee suffered a serious head injury and died in the emergency room,” Lt Santichai said.
“We were told that the couple left Cherng Talay on the motorbike. When they got to the area where the road was under construction to expand the lanes, Mr Pisit lost control of the vehicle and crashed due to the condition of the road,” he said.
No helmets were found at the scene, he added.
“Residents said that the road has too many potholes and no street lights,” Lt Santichai said.
“Every night motorbikes crash there, they said, and on July 11 several people were injured because they crashed their motorbikes in this area,” he added.
“The residents said they had asked the authorities to take care of this road and repair the surface so motorists can travel safely, but so far nothing has been done,” he added.
