Phuket Health: Intuition: Develop your sixth sense

What kills “the sixth sense”? Do you have a good intuition? Or, is there a someone you know who is very intuitive or can even predict the future? Why some people suddenly change their mind for to get on a flight they feel is going to crash? But why some don’t feel anything?

So, what is intuition?

Some say it is a way of connecting with god, or the universe. Some people claim that everyone has it, others will oppose that a few gifted people have this connection.

On one hand, while we were growing up, we were told to dress appropriately for each season, but we were rarely asked if the scarf was too tight or if our sweater was itchy. When a child is about to complain, they are repeatedly advised not to cry when they are hurt, not to scream, and so on until self-perception is gone completely.

On the other hand, in this 24/7 society, with everything running fast, we are overloaded with information. Intense stimuli attacks us everyday and blunts our sensitivity. It becomes difficult to believe that our inner being follows the same natural laws as thousands of years ago.

At school we were taught to solve logical tasks, prove theorems and formulate our opinions that, as a result, develops our logic. But there are no opportunities to develop an intuition. Neither parents nor teachers have a single thought to allow an opportunity for “the sixth sense” to appear.

At the same time logic and intuitive cognition derive from ancient times. Plato, Spinoza and Hegel define intuition as holistic with an instant understanding of the essence of things that don’t require detailed evidence.

The etymology of the word intuition comes from Latin and means ‘contemplation’ from the verb intueor, meaning “penetrating gaze”, “instant comprehension”.

If there is too much external control from parents and society while the child’s identity (personality) is forming, then the ability to recognise inner feelings cannot be developed.

Then, it seems we grow up and the pressure from our parents or guardian that has been beaming through our ears the whole time has become a part of our personality.

While living our everyday lives we tend to control everything. We go to the gym, run every morning or evening, and put ourselves on a diet – the question is, do we do these things based on the body sensations, feelings of gratitude and love, or based on the belief that it is the right thing to do?

Question yourself, what do you feel after you have just run 5 km or finished your 3 week diet? Joy and gratitude of your body or enthusiasm that the mind won a competition with the body? There is a big gap between these two positive feelings. This difference can change the quality of life dramatically.

Do I eat vegetables because I believe they won’t put fat on my body or because I like the taste? Do I go to work because I need to pay my bills or because I love my job and have an opportunity to open up my potential there? What do I feel when I make my life choices?

How is this all related to intuition? When we live a fulfilling life, we free our minds to allow room for our intuition – this instant understanding of what is going on, what is good and helpful for us at this moment. Intuitive knowledge and logic is based on experience. We can accumulate our sensual experiences; the platform for intuition to come.

What can help us to accumulate a sensual experience and develop intuition?

Meditation – practice of stopping your mind, being present in the moment and focus on breathing and body sensations.

Yoga – during yoga practice, we also concentrate on sensations in the body and clear up the mind from thoughts and worries.

Focus on your needs: have enough time to sleep, eat natural fresh foods, walk a lot outdoors and do things you really enjoy.
