Joining Gov Chamroen for the inspection was Thawee Homhoun, who is the Chief of the Phuket Provincial Office of Public Works and Town & Country Planning.

Also present were Kathu District Chief Sayan Chanachaiwong and officials from Patong Municipality.

The team, along with representatives from Jungceylon management, inspected the repair works carried out on support pillars that showed signs of crumbling early last month. (See story here.)

In press release issued today, Governor Chamroen assured that the area is safe and that the pillars had been strengthened and repaired appropriately. He also ordered all shops near the kiosk in The Port zone to reopen today.

Slilla Svetsreni, Senior Public Relations Manager at Jungceylon, confirmed to The Phuket News, “The Port zone is open to the public today. Many vendors are in the area today to clean their shops and by Sunday all 10 restaurants will be open.”

However, Ms Slilla added that the “Asian Spirit” zone, underground near the “That’s Siam” zone, remains closed while renovations are completed. “We will let you know when it will re-open fully,” she said.

“The section of the Asian Spirit zone that has been closed off covers only 2% of the underground area. The That’s Siam zone and Food Bazaar zone, both of which are also part of the underground section, are open as usual,” Ms Slilla said.

Provincial Public Works Chief Mr Thawee assured that engineers will continue to monitor the area closely.

“Although the area is open, it will remain under close watch for 30 days and engineers will check the condition of the repaired area to make sure that it is safe and secure,” he said.
