The readiness of the 2026 historical drama, titled ‘Ya Chan – Ya Muk: Nine Heroes of Thalang’, was announced at a press conference held at Central Phuket on Sunday (Feb 15).
The event is being organised by the Phuket Provincial Administrative Organisation (PPAO) in collaboration with Phuket Province Office under the concept ‘Love of Nation, Protection of the Land, Heroines of Thalang’.
The annual show commemorates the bravery and sacrifice of Thao Thep Krasattri (Ya Chan) and Thao Sri Soonthorn (Ya Muk), who led the defence of Thalang against Burmese forces in 1785.
Among those attending the press conference were Phuket Governor Nirat Pongsitthavorn, PPAO President Rewat Areerob and Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Phuket Office Director Siriwan Seeharach.
Also present were Naphatrapon Nolchit, a member of the executive committee of the Thao Thep Krasattri–Thao Sri Sunthorn Foundation; Thanit Prateep Na Thalang, a descendant of Ya Chan and Ya Muk; and two well-known actresses ‒ Hana Lewis, who will portray Ya Chan, and Maggie Apapha Phavilai, who will play Ya Muk.
Mr Rewat said this year’s event “is definitely more special than other years”, highlighting that the festival has been extended from three days to four to allow more residents and tourists the opportunity to attend.
“We have also upgraded the format of the performance to be grander and more contemporary,” he said.
The 2026 production not only recounts the heroic deeds of Ya Chan and Ya Muk, but also pays tribute to seven additional figures remembered for their roles in defending Thalang: Phraya Thongpoon, Phraya Thalangthian, Mae Prang, Chao Khun Marda Thong, Phraya Yokbat Chui, Mahatlek Niam and Nai Thongpeng.
Organisers say the storyline reflects the bravery, unity and multicultural character of the Thalang community at the time, reinforcing local pride and historical awareness among younger generations.
This year’s show will feature a newly revamped presentation style incorporating large-scale LED screen technology to enhance visual effects and audience engagement. The performances will be complemented by a wide range of cultural and traditional activities, including Thai arts performances and concerts by well-known artists across all four days.
More than 300 stalls selling local food and community products will also be set up, showcasing Phuket’s distinctive identity and way of life. Stage activities will continue after the main drama performance each evening to create a lively festival atmosphere.
Governor Nirat said the annual tribute to the two heroines reflects the spirit, unity and strength of the people of Phuket.
He noted that the event also leverages the province’s historical and cultural capital to promote sustainable development, particularly by supporting cultural tourism and reinforcing Phuket’s image as a world-class tourist destination with clear roots and identity.
The light and sound show will be held from Mar 13-16, starting at 5pm each day at the Thalang Memorial (Baan Riang) in Thalang. Admission is free for the public and visitors.
Residents and tourists, both Thai and international, are invited to attend and join in commemorating the courage of the Heroines of Thalang while helping preserve Phuket’s rich history for future generations.
