Phuket’s Emerald Group CEO on bail again, after missing court date

PHUKET: Emerald Group CEO Sawit Ketroj, the prominent Phuket condo developer arrested earlier this month on a fraud charge, was re-released on bail this week after failing to present himself to court as part of his original bail conditions, police have confirmed.

Sawit Ketroj (centre) and senior management hold up land deeds and other documents supporting their defence against the allegations at a press conference in May last year.

Mr Sawit faces charges of fraud after not delivering condo units as agreed by contract despite receiving millions in down payments.

Mr Sawit now stands accused of defrauding investors of a total of more than B127.5mn, explained Tourist Police Chief Surachet Hakpan, who visited Phuket in person to announce the case to the press. (See story here.)

“Mr Sawit missed his court bail appointment on Tuesday (May 15),” Capt Ekkachai Siri of the Phuket Tourist Police confirmed to The Phuket News this morning (May 18).

“He failed to turn up at the court on time, which broke his bail conditions. After that, the court issued a new warrant for his arrest and Phuket Provincial Police officers went and found him at his office and served the warrant yesterday (May 17),” he added.

“Mr Sawit is still in Phuket province. I don’t think he will run away. Don’t worry, Patong Police are keeping a close eye on him,” Capt Ekkachai assured.

Capt Ekkachai said he could not confirm whether Mr Sawit will face further punishment for breaking his bail condition.

“That is up to the court,” he said.

The one court official willing to speak to The Phuket News, on the condition of anonymity, declined to comment on what further punishment Mr Sawit faced for breaking bail.

“He forgot to report himself… He was handed down his punishment and released on bail again,” the official said.

Meanwhile, the Phuket press corps has been informed that representatives of the Emerald Group will present their case to the public at a press conference tomorrow (May 19).

That defence will follow Mr Sawit in May last year explaining at length the status of all the major condo construction projects and the complaints against him that have led to the fraud charges he faces today. (See story here.)

Absolute rubbish from the clowns who don't even bother to research the subject, nor have a clue about Court processes and the reasons for the same, yet can spurt their ridiculous warped ideas.

It is different in many other countries
In many countries is no 'bail keep you out of prison' after committing a heavy crime, like the Red Bull boy or de demoted top monk of that flying saucer money tempel factory or other Kingpins
Selective social level justice is blocking justice for many people in Thailand
Poor guy plucked, Premchai killed in Nat Park. Who was in prison right away?

Pauly44 | 20 May 2018 - 15:16:49

Again another stupid comment, are you saying anyone in any other country does not show up for court then holds a press conference "reassuring" the public and the police are satisfied keeping an eye on him, especially this guy has fleeced millions off investors, outrageous, YES ofcourse it is very different, it's called corruption.

Jor12 | 19 May 2018 - 21:07:58

Don't know what the fuss is all about. It's no different to any other country in the world.

BenPendejo | 19 May 2018 - 01:12:09

Complete farce...no wonder nobody follows the law in this country...laws just don't apply if you have the bucks. Talk about losing face...this entire police/court system has got s#!7 all over it's face on a daily basis.

CaptainJack69 | 18 May 2018 - 20:28:35

Well if you don't show up in court you forfeit your bail money, that is after all (contrary to what so often seems to be the case here) what "bail" is supposed to be for

Rather here it seems to be more of a flat 'stay-out-of-jail' fee that goes directly to the murky coffers of the so-called justice system.

What incentive is there then to show up at all?

Kurt | 18 May 2018 - 18:26:18

All this bail report nonsense. Courts nothing better to do?
The person remains on Phuket. Patong police keeps a eye on him, as mentioned by RTP, that has nothing more important to do as rains to submerge the Patong RTP station still have to come.
The man is hard working, forgot a nonsense report, So, what?

What a joke! This place never ceases to amaze me.
