Phuket drain-construction delays blamed on lack of sand

PHUKET: A large chunk of Phuket’s busy bypass road where drain construction has been ongoing for several months has started to crack and there are concerns that the road could collapse should works not be completed or repairs carried out soon.

Should the section of road collapse it will further reduce the width of the already narrowed road and will surely make it even more hazardous for motorists, warned project engineer Chalermpol Wongkiattikun of the Department of Highways in Bangkok.

The delays in the construction of the drains have been blamed on a lack of sand, Mr Chalermpol said.

“I am concerned at the state of the road in front of the Index Living Mall,” Mr Chalermpol told The Phuket News.

“We have to work slowly on the drain construction because there have been delays in receiving the sand we need from Phang Nga.

“However, once the sand has been delivered work will continue.”
