Phuket commemorates King Rama I, Chakri Dynasty Memorial Day

PHUKET: Provincial officials held a solemn ceremony yesterday (Apr 6) to mark King Rama I the Great Day and Chakri Memorial Day, honouring the founding monarch of the Chakri Dynasty and his successors who have shaped the nation’s history.

Today (Apr 7) is the substitution day holiday, with all government offices on the island closed.

The event yesterday highlighted the role of King Rama I (Buddha Yodfa Chulaloke) in founding the Rattanakosin era in 1782 and establishing Bangkok as the capital, laying the groundwork for national unity and progress.

It also paid tribute to the continuing legacy of the Chakri Dynasty in guiding the country through eras of change and maintaining Thailand’s independence and peace, said an official report of the event.

His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua (Rama X) is the 10th regent of the Chakri Dynasty to ascend to the throne as King of Thailand.

The event took place at the ‘Mahisorn Phakdi Auditorium’ at Phuket Provincial Hall. Phuket Vice Governor Adul Chuthong, as Acting Governor, presided over the ceremony, joined by fellow Vice Governor Suwit Phansengiam; the Governor’s wife, Busadee Suwannarat; as well as local officials, military and police officers, judicial representatives and members of local administrative organisations.

The ceremony began at 8am with participants registering to present traditional ‘phan phum’ tributes. At 8:30am, representatives from government bodies, the private sector and the public laid the ‘phan phum’.in front of a portrait of King Rama I. At 9am, senior officials followed suit.

At 9:30am, Vice Governor. Adul and his spouse arrived to pay tribute by offering a wreath and reciting a royal anthem, honouring the legacy of King Rama I and the contributions of the Chakri monarchs throughout Thai history.

Participants expressed their loyalty and gratitude to the royal family and prayed for continued prosperity, stability and unity for the Thai nation, the official report concluded.
