Phuket celebrates 40 years of Thai-Chinese relations

PHUKET: Over 200 representatives from the Thai and Chinese governments including the Cultural Attache to the Chinese Embassy in Thailand, Mr Chern Jiang, and Phuket Governor, Nisit Jansomwong, attended an event on Saturday (August 29) to mark 40 years of Thailandʼs relationship with China.

Also in attendance at the event, held at The Royal Paradise Hotel and Spa in Patong and organised by the Thai-Chinese Artist Federation and Ai Jia Woy (Peking) Technology Co.,Ltd were members of the private sectors, entrepreneurs and tourists from both countries.

The main purpose of the event was to further enhance the good relationship between the two countries and encourage more business relations in areas such as trade, investment and tourism.

Speaking at the event, Mr Chern said, “There has been a very long relationship between China and Thailand and many Chinese tourist visit Thailand every year, especially Phuket.

“We would like Phuket and concerned parties to focus on the quality of transport, security and other ultilities in order to attract more Chinese tourists.

“Phuket has a reputation for being one of the most beautiful places for Chinese people to visit already,” he said.

Gov Nisit added that Thailand and China have had a close business relationship for a long time.

“We want to continue to encourage the expansion of business cooperation in trade, investment and tourism between Thailand and China.

“Chinese tourists bring so much income to our country and to locals in Phuket, and i want to see them happy and comfortable, and for them to place Phuket in their hearts as much as possible.”

On July 1, 1975 a Thai delegation headed by Prime Minister Kukrit Pramoj put on board a Thai Airways flight five essential items: 200 durian, 50-packs of Samit Virginia cigarettes, dozens of bottles of Tara and Maekhong whisky and Singha beer and lots of fresh flowers. These items were all given out to the Thai delegation at Saturdayʼs event as a thank you for the continuing relationship.
