Organised by the Peranakan Association of Thailand in collaboration with the Phuket Provincial Administrative Organisation (PPAO), Phuket City Municipality, the Phuket Tourist Association and partner organisations, the event aimed to preserve and continue the Baba-Peranakan wedding customs that have been passed down in Phuket for more than 100 years.

Held under the theme ‘A Glimpse into the Magnificent Past: A Centennial Baba Wedding of Love’, the ceremony drew officials, tourism representatives and members of the public eager to celebrate one of Phuket’s most distinctive cultural identities.

Among those attending were Phuket Vice Governor Adul Chuthong, Vice President of the Phuket Chapter of the Red Cross Khemmawan Chuthong, former Phuket Town Deputy Mayor and founder of the Phuket Peranakan Association Kosol Tang-Uthai, and former Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannarat.

The atmosphere throughout Phuket Old Town reflected the rich blend of Chinese and Malay influences that define Baba-Peranakan culture. Both Thai and foreign couples wore brightly coloured traditional outfits, with brides dressed in intricately embroidered gowns and grooms wearing classic Chinese-Malay attire.

The ceremony began with the brides gathering at Sino House Phuket before the groom’s procession travelled through the old town to the historic Hong Yok House (Ang Mo Lao) accompanied by firecrackers and celebrations from relatives and guests.

Traditional rituals followed upon arrival at the bride’s house, including the “silver and gold gate” ceremony and the formal welcoming of the bride. Couples then took part in key rites central to Baba-Peranakan weddings, including paying respects to gods, heaven and earth, and the traditional tea ceremony known as ‘Phang Te’, held to honour elders and express gratitude to family members.

Another highlight of the event saw couples posing for photographs at landmarks throughout Phuket Old Town, including historic Sino-Portuguese buildings, old streets and heritage mansions that showcase Phuket’s unique architectural character.

Organisers said the annual ceremony continues to play an important role in preserving and promoting Phuket’s Baba-Peranakan heritage to both Thai and international visitors, while reinforcing cooperation between government agencies, the tourism sector and local communities in safeguarding the island’s cultural traditions for future generations.
