However, the thief also left a pair of clean jeans behind at the back of the house.

Pipatpong Kongmanee, a 40-year-old market clothes vendor, and his wife reported the break-in to the Thalang Police at 10am today.

On inspecting the house, officers led by Capt Kraisorn Boonprasop of the Thalang Police at 11am found a single glass louvre removed from the window beside the back door.

The bedroom had been tossed, indicating the thief was searching for items specifically in that one room. It paid off, as that is where the valuables were kept.

Police said no other rooms in the house looked like they had been searched.

“But we have taken fingerprint samples from throughout the house as a precaution,” Capt Kraisorn said.

Mr Pipatpong reported that more than 60 amulets featuring images of revered monks, including Luang Por Chaem, Luang Por Sothorn and Luang Por Tuad, had been stolen.

He estimated the combined value of the amulets as more than B100,000.

Also missing was B30,000 in cash.

However, the thief left a pair of jeans behind at the back of the house, Mr Pipatpong added.

“We left the house to go to the night market in Kamala at about 11am yesterday, and we returned home at about 2am (today),” Mr Pipatpong said.

Police checked CCTV from the neighbourhood and discovered that by chance the thief was recorded climbing onto a rear canopy for a pickup truck that was in front of the house and then clambering over the fence at about 10:42am, according to the time goven by the CCTV camera.

“The thief is in his twenties. He was wearing grey T-shirt, dark pants, a pair of well-worn jeans, a black cap and had a carry bag,” said Capt Kraisorn.

“We checked with Mr Pipatpong, and he said he had no idea why the pair of jeans were left behind,” he added.

“We are searching for the thief now,” said Capt Kraisorn noted.
