The funding and proposed projects were discussed at a meeting of the Phuket Provincial Sub-committee for Considering Requests for Allocation of Funds from the Road Safety Fund, held at Phuket Provincial Hall last Friday (June 12).

The meeting was chaired by Vice Governor Adul Chuthong before Phuket Land Transport Office (PLTO) Chief Adcha Buachan was assigned to continue chairing proceedings. Representatives from government agencies and related organisations attended to consider the management and allocation of the fund for road safety initiatives across the island.

The committee acknowledged the approval of B4mn in Road Safety Fund support for Phuket for the 2026 fiscal year, along with the appointment of the provincial sub-committee and a working group responsible for screening, monitoring and evaluating road safety projects.

Members also reviewed progress reports to ensure projects funded through the scheme comply with the fund’s regulations and objectives.

The meeting heard that eight projects undertaken by seven agencies had received more than B3.2mn in funding during the previous allocation round. Those projects included road safety campaigns, public awareness activities and other initiatives aimed at reducing road accidents in Phuket.

Officials then considered two new projects seeking additional funding for the current fiscal year.

The first proposal, submitted by NBT Phuket, seeks support for the creation of a public relations network to promote road safety awareness among residents, tourists and tourism operators. The project aims to increase understanding of traffic laws and encourage safer road-use behaviour.

The second proposal, submitted by the PLTO, focuses on improving safety standards for public motorcycle services. The project aims to enhance safety among motorcycle taxi operators and passengers while helping reduce the risk of road accidents.

Committee members reviewed both proposals for their compliance with Road Safety Fund criteria, overall suitability and potential public benefit.

The meeting stressed that all funding allocations must be made transparently and efficiently, with projects required to deliver measurable improvements in road safety and contribute to the fund’s objective of reducing deaths and injuries from road accidents in Phuket.
