Management at Phuket International Airport were informed of the security breach yesterday (Apr 9).

Airport management told The Phuket News they were “looking into it”, but have yet to give any indication that an investigation is underway, or even acknowledge the breach in airport security.

The sign was photographed by a traveller at the airport, who told The Phuket News, “I don’t know if it’s been seen before, but it was a first for me and no one really seemed to notice it”

The traveller noted that the sign was “right next to information at the gates, in front of baggage scan/security”.

The electronic sign said: “Hacked by Nexusqassamy”.

The message was labelled “baby killer” and said, “Gaza is being subjected to genocide by Israel, babies are dying, no one is doing anything, when will the world wake up, babies are dying”.

The hacked message was signed “Telegram: nexusqassamy”.

A PROCLAMATION OF SAFETY

Meanwhile, AoT Phuket chose yesterday to highly promote Phuket Airport’s readiness to provide safe, secure and convenient service to passengers using Phuket’s critical tourism portal during the Songkran holidays.

The announcement came at the usual annual event, amid much fanfare and a large assembly of security officers on show. The event included a parade of security vehicles, including security personnel swishing around on Segways,

AoT Phuket General Manager Monchai Tanode said that the 10-day holiday period from Apr 10-19 is forecast to see a total of 523,306 passengers passing through the airport, with an average of 52,331 passengers per day.

Of these, 322,768 are expected to be international travelers, while 200,538 will be domestic. The airport also anticipates handling 3,225 flights during this time – 1,726 international and 1,499 domestic – averaging 323 flights per day.

To handle the increased volume, the airport has rolled out several key initiatives, Mr Monchai said.

The airport has stepped up its use of public relations and support staff to assist travelers, particularly in using the airport’s biometric identification system. A Real-Time Passenger Tracking System (RTPTS) will be in operation around the clock to monitor passenger density and help manage crowds efficiently. All infrastructure and facilities have undergone checks to ensure they meet safety and service standards.

To accommodate the holiday crowds, the number of public buses serving the airport will be increased. Authorities, including the Royal Thai Army, will also carry out random drug testing on public transport drivers and enforce traffic rules to enhance safety and prevent incidents, he said.

In a move to support travelers, the Royal Thai Army is offering free parking in front of its airport office building from Apr 11 (00:01am) to Apr 16 (23:59pm).

The airport is also joining in the Songkran spirit under the theme ‘Splashing Happiness Across Thailand, Enjoying HKT’, Mr Monchai announced.

Passengers can enjoy cultural performances and receive festive souvenirs on Apr 11. From Apr 9-20, travellers can also take part in traditional Songkran activities, including water-pouring rituals at designated booths in both the international and domestic terminals, he noted.

“In line with Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) regulations, passengers are reminded that water guns – considered imitation weapons – are not allowed in carry-on luggage and must be checked in,” Mr Monchai said in an announcement.

Travelers are advised to arrive at the airport two to three before departure to ensure they do not miss their flights, he added.

For flight information, the “SAWASDEE by AOT” app is available, or travellers can contact the airport at 076-351111 or 076-351801. In case of emergencies or suspicious activity, the Phuket Airport Security Center can be reached 24/7 at 076-351191, the announcement said.

“Safety is the standard, service is the heart,” Mr. Montchai emphasised, urging travelers to enjoy the holiday with peace of mind.
