TasteAtlas has placed Phanaeng curry at the top of the Best Stews in the World ranking, with a 4.8 score out of 5, reports NNT.

The website describes Phanaeng curry as a variety of Thai curry that is characterized by its thick texture and a salty-sweet peanut flavor, consisting of meat that is stewed with dried chilis, kaffir lime leaves, coconut milk, cilantro, cumin, garlic, lemongrass, shallots, and peanuts. The dish is traditionally made without any vegetables.

Another Thai dish making the top-ten ranking is Massaman curry, coming at number eight with a score of 4.6. The website says Massaman stands out from other Thai curries as it is the mildest and sweetest kind.

TasteAtlas describes Massaman curry as a combination of creamy coconut milk, meat, potatoes, and a curry paste made with roasted spices, while highlighting the use of coconut milk in this dish as an authentic Thai element, providing a rich base for the rest of the ingredients.

Thicker cuts of meat such as beef, bone-in chicken, lamb, and mutton are typically used for this dish, which is cooked along with spices such as cumin, coriander, cloves, cinnamon, and peppercorns, mixed with fresh garlic, chili, galangal, lemongrass, tamarind paste, and palm sugar.

@Christy Get the facts right ! Panang did not originate from the south of Thailand ! And the Brits did not commandeer the South and therefore never gave it over to Thailand ! Now give it back ? Why don't you ask your own government to give back all the land they stole from the indigenous ? I think you better keep comparing the look and taste of panaeng and baby poo instead of giving false...

christysweet | 24 March 2023 - 12:45:43

Yes southern Thailand which is populated by people of Malaysian heritage (because the British commandeered it then gave it over to Thailand. Now give it back.

The spelling "Phanaeng"is actually correct. Wikipedia lists the place of origin as Thailand. It first appeared in Mom Somchin Rachanupraphen's book Tamra Kap Khao published in 1890. Personally, I much prefer massaman.

Er,no Christy. Not the far south ! And regarding all curries look like baby poo ,you are excused for that. I mean coming from a country where they see a "Hamburger" or a "Hot Dog" as a delicacy ,you of course doesn't know any better.

christysweet | 23 March 2023 - 14:54:02

Er, it's far southern Thai and so essentially Malaysian. Regardless all curries are grossly overspiced and disgusting in appearance - very much like baby poo. Barf.

Pascale | 23 March 2023 - 09:59:47

@Timothy A Malaysian curry ? Oh dear, you really have no idea what you are talking about. Go back to the cooking school and educate yourself.

Timothy | 23 March 2023 - 07:51:53

John, they had to change the name so they could claim a Malaysian curry as their own.

JohnC | 22 March 2023 - 09:45:38

Stew? Never heard a Thai curry called that before. Though in culinary terms I guess it applies. The weirdest spelling of Panang (พะแนง) I have seen. LOL.
