The free tram service starts from Queen Sirikit 72nd Anniversary Park and runs along Thalang, Krabi, Satun, Dibuk, Rassada, Phang Nga, Phuket and Montri roads before returning to the park.
Phuket Deputy Mayor, Dr Kosol Tang-Uthai said, “We have received support from a business which makes replica trams to get this service running. This group would like to see a tram service introduced to Phuket.
“We are now running the tram service for a trial period.”
Dr Kosol also said that it will be down to Phuket people whether the service becomes permanent or not.
“We only have one 24-seat tram running at present. It was full on every round when it started yesterday and everyone who used it enjoyed it a lot,” he said.
The 4 wheel, petrol engine tram has been already been successfully introduced in Bangkok and Songkhla and each costs around B800,000–B900,000.
At present, the tram runs twice in the morning at 9am and 11am, and four time sin the afternoon at 1pm, 2pm, 3pm and 4pm.
Anyone who has any comments on the service are being invited to call Phuket Municipality Of fice on 076-212 196 ext 312 or 076-214-306.
