Pol Lt Wisarut Mahachoti, Deputy Investigator at Chalong Police Station, reported that the incident occurred on Patak Rd, about 600 metres west of the Chalong Circle, at about 2:30am.
Officers arriving at the scene found a black BMW 330e M Sport sedan, registered in Bangkok, driven by a 19-year-old* resident of Rawai.
The victim, identified as Atthachai Deeprom, 47, originally from Nakhon Phanom, was found with severe injuries after being hit while on foot. He was later pronounced dead.
CCTV footage circulating online shows that Mr Atthachai had initially crossed the road with a group of friends, but returned to the centre of the road to retrieve a mobile phone that had been dropped.
In the footage, one vehicle is seen speeding past, narrowly missing him. Moments later, a second car travelling behind at speed struck Mr Atthachai, sending his body flying more than 10 metres from the point of impact.
Police documented the scene, collected evidence and are continuing to review CCTV footage as part of the investigation.
Initial reports described the victim as a transgender woman, though police have officially identified the deceased as Mr Atthachai.
Investigators have since charged the driver with reckless driving causing death. Further legal proceedings are continuing. Police did not identify the driver by nationality.
