Pol Maj Chayakorn Tangsakul of the Patong Police was informed of the assault, on Phra Metta Rd, at about 9:08pm.
The incident resulted in injuries, police were told, prompting Maj Chayakorn to dispatch officers to immediately investigate.
Patong Police Chief Pol Col Chalermchai Hoernsawat was informed of the incident, police said.
A police patrol unit arrived at the scene to find a Thai man sitting on the ground bleeding profusely from head and arm injuries.
The injured party, identified as 39-year-old Aekapong Krueafaeng, from Surat Thani, claimed he was attacked by members of a local motorbike taxi ‘queue’ in front of the Journeyhub Phuket Patong hotel.
Mr Aekapong said he was struck repeatedly with an iron rod. CCTV footage circulating online since the attack corroborated his report.
When questioned, the taxi queue members explained that they acted in self-defence, alleging that Mr Aekapong initiated the confrontation and attempted to attack them first.
Police coordinated with the rescue workers from the Phuket Kusoldharm Foundation to transport Mr Aekapong to Patong Hospital for treatment of his injuries.
Three of the motorbike taxi queue drivers ‒ Sitthichok Khwankeeree, 40, from Nakhon Sri Thammarat; Banjoed Dangpradab, 54, from Phuket; and Natawut Katasila, 38, from Si Sa Ket ‒ were taken to Patong Police Station for questioning.
Police have yet to confirm any charges against any parties over the incident.
