Police were alerted to the shooting at 8:23am this morning (June 3).

Officers arrived at Patong Hospital, where the wife was taken for treatment of her injuries.

At the hospital, officers found the fruit shop owner, Niwat Kongsom, waiting for them.

Niwat told police that he had fired his Browning 9mm handgun during an argument with his wife, Kulap Naowko-aksorn (described by police as Niwat’s ’mea’).

She had an affair with a man named Kai, from Myanmar. Kai, an ethnic Mon, had been hired to help out at the fruit shop.

Kai had been working at the shop for just two to three days, Niwat told police.

The affair was consummated in the worker’s room of their fruit shop on Sirirat Rd, he said.

It was not explanied how Niwat learned of his wife’s indiscretion, but Niwat said that while confronting her about it, in a fit of anger he fired two shots into the ceiling.

Unfortunately, one of the bullets ricocheted, striking Ms Kulap in the left arm, he explained.

Following the incident, Kai fled the scene, while he rushed his wife to hospital, Niwat continued.

Police placed Niwat under arrest and seized the handgun used in the incident.

He was taken to Patong Police Station for further questioning and to face potential charges related to the shooting.

The police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting and the actions of all parties involved, police said.
