The report warned the situation is expected to get worse if parents and teachers fail to improve nutritional awareness among the young, reports the Bangkok Post.

During a briefing to unveil the findings yesterday, department chief Dr Suwannachai Wattanayingcharoenchai said parents should create a healthier environment as the study suggests youngsters are exposed to an overabundance of food containing unhealthy levels of fat, sugar and salt.

According to the ministry’s Health Data Centre, 9.1% of kids aged 0-5 years old are considered overweight for their age, with that proportion rising to 13.4% in 6–14-year-olds and 13.2% in the 15-18 category.

The World Obesity Federation has forecast that rates of childhood obesity are expected to double between 2020 and 2035.

These findings are in line with another department report into children’s diets, which discovered that a third consume sweet snacks and beverages every day, and almost 30% are permitted to select food based purely on their own preferences.

“As World Obesity Day falls on March 4, we would like parents to select healthy food for their children. Children often make bad choices when left to choose what to eat which is only made worse by the marketing strategies of confectionary manufacturers.

“Parents and schools should teach them how to select good food and what the consequences to their health a poor diet can pose,” he said.

“They should eat sweets no more than twice a week, a serving of fish at least once a week, a maximum of three eggs a week, as well as more calcium-rich foods such as sardines, beans and lentils.

“Fresh fruit and vegetables are recommended every day, as is exercise to strengthen muscles and bones,” he suggested.

@Capricornball Regarding crap parenting. I see you constantly like to use the word "sh.." Your parents taught you that ?

H2538 | 08 March 2023 - 06:43:09

When "Masters" promote a sedentary lifestyle with door to door driving (malls), sugar cane farms outside schools and free flow of drink, drugs and donuts can't expect anything else.

Capricornball | 06 March 2023 - 16:11:02

Again, crap parenting. Go into SuperCheap or 7-11 in the evening and watch how much cheap, crappy sugar drinks and junk food are bought by adults. I think it is the result of a crap education system, as most parents seem to make similar irresponsible choices for unhealthy food as kids, because their poor schooling left them with the brain power of 7 year olds.

Hopefully the Thais will cease to follow the Amerikan way of life. In my time in Amerika I never was able, or wated, to finish a restaurant meal. Pure piggery.

Convenience stores and lazy parents - but not to worry there is a drug available soon that will treat the effects of poor eating habits so sad

Fascinated | 06 March 2023 - 11:31:02

Probably higher from what I observe. Intsead of banning alcohol within set distances of school (in theory) they sweetie stalls and other junk food outside school gates should be removed. Ten years ago it was unusual to see a fit kid here- now they are everywhere. Western junk food to blame as well- with a certain chicken franchise popular when traditional fried chicken is far nicer and cheaper.

IMO that advice on eggs is outdated. It was the fried potatoes, butter and bacon in the breakfasts that were the contributers to high cholesterol.

Is there a name for not being able to see typos and misspellings in text UNTIL it is published? Flabluate?

HOw else is the pharmacuetical industry going to creat consumers for their drugs to treat the damage from massive sufar intake? Jeez some folks just don't seem to know how capitalism works. First-create a market.

Not surprising really. I have noticed an increase in the size of Thais over the years I've been here. Started when they first introduced junk food places like McSpew and KFC last century and sadly like other Asian countries the choices of fast food just kept on coming. Asians also fatten up their kids so others think they are well off. Look at us we can afford to eat more than you!
