The Phuket Provincial Governance Committee (PGC) this week convened its second informal meeting at the Phuket Provincial Department of Public Works and Town Planning office, where members reviewed a slate of infrastructure projects aimed at improving drainage and mitigating urban flooding.

Vice Chairman Peerapich Ongcharoen chaired the meeting alongside senior officials and representatives from relevant agencies, including the department overseeing the works.

The projects under review include the B35mn Bang Yai Canal drainage improvement scheme, designed to reduce flood risks in urban areas, as well as embankment and earth dam construction along key waterways in Thalang District. These include the Tha Ruea–Koh Kaew Canal and the Nanai Canal in Srisoonthorn and Koh Kaew, with combined budgets exceeding B53.5mn.

Committee members examined progress updates, operational plans and potential risks that could affect delivery timelines and budgets. Particular concern was raised over rising fuel prices, which may drive up construction costs.

Agencies responsible for the projects were instructed to closely monitor fluctuations in median pricing and the K-factor – a mechanism used in government contracts to adjust for cost changes – to ensure projects remain on track and within budget.

Following the meeting, officials conducted a site inspection at Bang Yai Canal to assess current conditions, review construction progress and hear directly from project teams about on-the-ground challenges.

The visit also allowed the committee to evaluate the canal’s drainage performance and identify areas for improvement, with findings to be used in refining project execution.

Officials said the combined meeting and field inspection highlight the committee’s proactive approach to overseeing public works, with the aim of strengthening accountability and maintaining public confidence in government spending.
