Phuket Vice Governor Amnuay Pinsuran led the event, held at Queen Sirikit Park. Joining the event were Chief Phuket Provincial Prosecutor Mr Ittichot Kulrattanachote from the Phuket branch of the Office of the Attorney General and Supipat Anurat of the Phuket Provincial Office of Social Development and Human Security.

Also joining the event, and the campaign, were Phuket members of the Good Shepherd Sisters and the ‘For Freedom International Foundation’, whose Phuket director Mattias Bjorkqvist delivered a speech on the ‘Dangers from online media’.

Vice Governor Amnuay said, “We ask everyone to join together in taking care of children and women and stop using violence by using love because ‘Love conquers everything in the world’.

Mr Ittichot explained that the event was held to raise awareness of violence against children, and human trafficking across all sectors of the community.

Mr Ittichot also pointed out the ‘Domestic Violence Victim Protection Act, B.E. 2007’. “This law focuses on protecting victims of domestic violence and adjusts the behaviour of violent offenders, including deterring repeat offenses. It helps to maintain good relationships in the family, and it protects victims of human trafficking,” he said.

To help raise awareness of the issue, after the event small teams walked along the Lard Yai Walking Street market while holding signs and distributing leaflets calling for an end to violence against children and human trafficking. The signs and the leaflets were in three languages: Thai, Chinese and English.

More activities will be held to raise awareness of the issue, including recreational activities for participants to express their opinions and suggest guidelines, said an official report of the event yesterday.

Awareness and prevention will be promoted through writing competitions, quizzes and prize-winning games and performances by children and youth and local community leaders.

There also will be a discussion under the theme ‘Equality between the sexes to end violence against women, children, and LGBT!’ held at the meeting room of the Phuket office of the Attorney General, at the Phuket Provincial Administrative Center (home to Phuket Provincial Hall), on Wednesday (Nov 22), starting at 9am.
