The centre is officially opened.

Police officers - including those from the tourist police - joined the special ceremony along with those from local administration offices.

The official '7 days of danger' road accident period started yesterday (December 27) and will finish on January 2.

At the opening, it was announced that during this holiday period, many tourists come to visit Phuket but are unfamiliar with the road. Accidents were "highly likely" because of this.

Gen Decha said, "The Central Investigation Bureau, which includes the highway police, tourist police, and the regular tourist police division is aware of this problem of road accidents, so we have launched this campaign to give knowledge to locals, tourists and students.

"We can all help to reduce road accidents during this holiday period by checking the car and making sure the driver is ready before going on a long trip. Planning in advance is needed, and drivers are encouraged to use rest areas if they feel tired."
